The First BIRKENSTOCK Icon: Our Footbed
All classic models have one thing in common: the original footbed, which is the heart of BIRKENSTOCK’s philosophy. The footbed's anatomical shape is inspired by orthopedic experience passed down from one generation of the Birkenstock family to the next and Karl Birkenstock's mission to enable a natural gait for people worldwide. The BIRKENSTOCK footbed is modeled on a natural footprint in the sand, mimicking walking on a soft, yielding surface.
With a foundation in orthopedics, BIRKENSTOCK is synonymous with sophisticated functionality, a dedication to craftsmanship, unwavering quality, and a promise of an incomparable product experience. Discover the capsule collection of the most comfortable sandals for men and women here.
Madrid: The Mother of All Footbed SandalsThe BIRKENSTOCK sandal's history began in the 1960s when Karl Birkenstock pioneered a natural approach to foot health. The Madrid sandal, with its minimalist design inspired by brutalist architecture, became a timeless icon that democratized footwear. BIRKENSTOCK's unisex design focused on functionality, simplicity, and natural materials. Their commitment to gender-neutral, ageless fashion resonated with consumers and the Madrid sandal remains popular after six decades. BIRKENSTOCK's innovative, quality approach to footwear endures. Madrid is available in three iconic colors: light brown, pigalle, and emerald.
Arizona: Everybody’s FavoriteBIRKENSTOCK's iconic ARIZONA sandal was launched in 1973, at a time when society was more open to accepting its unisex appeal. Initially sold in health food stores, the sandal quickly became a bestseller and a symbol of the counterculture in the 1970s. The sandal marked a cultural reset at the time. Arizona's focus on health and naturalness broke societal norms, appealing to subcultures and innovators. Find the classic Arizona sandals in black an white as part of the capsule collection.
Gizeh: Rendezvous with the World of FashionDrawing inspiration from ancient footwear, Karl Birkenstock created the first thong sandal with an ergonomically shaped toe bar. Launched in 1883, Gizeh stayed true to the brand's commitment to functionality and foot health. Gizeh was launched in five colors, including silver and gold, marking BIRKENSTOCK's first foray into fashion-forward footwear. The elegant Gizeh sandal is available in light brown, beige, and dark red as a part of the anniversary collection.
The Capsule CollectionTo celebrate the 60th, 50th, and 40th anniversaries of its Madrid, Arizona, and Gizeh sandals respectively, BIRKENSTOCK has launched limited-edition collections of the original models in eight colors.
