The BIRKENSTOCK Madrid is the oldest member of the family of models, making it a veritable classic. Launched as a gymnastics sandal half a century ago, this simple single-strap model has gone on to become a firm fashion favorite. We are now giving this popular classic the opportunity to show off its original design in our anniversary collection. With its buckles, the footbed, the outsole, and the packaging, the sandal replicates the 1963 original and exudes veritable retro flair. Every pair of the limited edition bears is own unique number and comes with the red BIRKENSTOCK seal and matching socks. The upper is made from soft, grained natural leather.
To fittingly mark the anniversary, every anniversary style comes with a free pair of matching socks.

THE ORIGINAL BIRKENSTOCK FOOTBED
1. Deep heel cup
The very deep molding in the heel area supports the foot tissue and holds the heel bone firmly in its natural position. This provides the foot with nearly as much support when it is in a sandal as when it is in a closed shoe.
2. Heel mould
Activates the calf muscles, stabilises the back of the foot and improves gait and coordination.
3. Interior and exterior longitudinal arch supports
The arch supports that run alongside the sides of the footbed surround the tarsal bones inside and out. This gives the foot the stability it needs when it takes a step.
4. Transverse arch support
The support that runs through the middle of the footbed stabilizes the metatarsal bone. In this way, the transverse arch support helps ensure that the foot has a naturally straight and solid stance.
5. Toe grip
There are raised indentations at the front of the footbed near the toes. Thanks to the toe grip the toes remain loose and spread out in their natural position. The indentations also support the natural rolling motion of the toes.
6. Footbed edge
The footbed is drawn up especially high at the front. As a result, the high footbed edge protects the toes during the rolling motion of the foot.
The heart of all models is the original BIRKENSTOCK footbed. The construction, which has been thought out to the smallest detail and makes it feel like you're standing in sand, helps your feet feel as comfortable as possible for hours on end. This supports health and promotes wellbeing.

How to measure your foot length
- Stand with the heel to a wall and put a measuring tape under your feet
- Read off the measured foot length in millimeters before your longest toe
- If you are between two sizes, choose the next higher, because feet are minimally greater under load

Optimal fit in two widths
Unfortunately, foot pain is one of the most common complaints people have.
Much of the pain that people feel when they run, walk and stand is the result of wearing the wrong shoes. In order to correct this – and this can be done – we offer you a choice of two different widths for many of the models in our shop.
Please be sure to choose the shoes with the correct symbol when selecting and order footwear. Your feet should be nestled in the footbed. This means that they should not rest on the inside and outside of the footbed edge. Just as with a regular bed – you don’t lie on the edge.
